I love reading.

It’s a hobby that’s good for your brain, vocabulary, and imagination.

But let’s be real — starting a book can be daunting.

The world is distracted — Your phone buzzes every few minutes, Netflix is begging you to binge the next series,— it feels like our attention spans are on life support.

Who has time for books anymore?

If you’re like me — a die-hard book lover — you know the struggle all too well.

I used to read a book a week. No joke. One after another, week after week, getting lost in stories and ideas that felt like they were written just for me.

Then life kicked in.

You know how it goes — work, socializing, the never-ending scroll through social media. Suddenly, weeks would go by, and I’d realize I hadn’t read a single page.

So — I made a decision.

I was going to find my way back to reading. And guess what? It worked.

Here’s how I got back into reading, and how you can too.

Find *Your* Book

Picking a book these days is like picking a date. Seriously.

Would you just go out with anyone? Probably not.

You’d pick someone who clicks with you, who gets your sense of humor, shares your interests. The same goes for books.

If you force yourself to read something that doesn’t click with you, it’s not going to be fun.

So, start by figuring out what you like.

  • Fiction

  • Non-fiction? (handshake:)

  • Romance

  • Mystery?

Once you know, do a little digging. Ask friends for recommendations, browse online lists, or take a stroll through a bookstore.

And don’t be afraid to try something new.

The best books sometimes surprise you.

When you find that book, you’ll know. You’ll be excited, and curious, and before you know it, you’re back into the reading game.

Time ≠ Reading

Life is hectic — there’s no denying that.

You make time for what matters, and reading should be one of those things.

First: Prioritize it. Just like you do with work or family time, reading deserves a spot in your day.

Maybe you wake up 15 minutes earlier or stay up a little later. Find what works for you.

Always have a book with you.

You’d be surprised how much time you actually have — waiting in line, during a commute, or on a lunch break. A few pages here and there add up.

And don’t feel guilty about it. Reading isn’t just a hobby; it’s an investment in yourself.

  • It’s learning

  • It’s escaping

  • It’s growing

So, own it. Make it part of your routine, and soon you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Personalized Reading Routine

Now that you’ve got the right book — let’s talk routine.

Reading isn’t just something you do when you’ve got nothing else going on.

Like anything worth doing, reading takes consistency.

Pick a time that works for you. Maybe it’s before bed, during breakfast, or on your commute. Whatever it is, make it your reading time.

And stick to it.

Set a goal.

Maybe it’s a chapter a day or 30 minutes of reading time. Whatever it is, keep it realistic.

You don’t want to burn out before you really get into it.

Pro tip: track your progress. Use a journal or an app to log what you’ve read, how long you’ve read, and any thoughts you have about the book.

It’s satisfying to see how far you’ve come, and it keeps you motivated to keep going.

Kill the Distractions

Distractions are everywhere — especially when you’re trying to read.

Netflix, social media, endless emails — there’s always something more urgent, more entertaining, or just easier to do than picking up a book.

So, when it’s time to read, eliminate them.

Start with your phone.

Put it on silent or, better yet, leave it in another room.

Find a quiet spot — a cozy chair, a park bench, wherever you feel comfortable — make sure it’s well-lit, and you’re all set.

If background noise is an issue, try noise-canceling headphones or play some white noise.

It’s amazing how much easier it is to get lost in a book when the world around you fades away.

Start Reading Today — No More Excuses

Still on the fence? Let me give you one last push.

Reading does so much more than just pass the time. It expands your mind, improves your focus, and gives you a break from reality. Plus, it’s fun.

It’s a form of self-care that can calm your mind and reduce stress.

Yes — life is busy. But think about how much time you spend scrolling through social media or watching TV.

What if you swapped just a little of that time for reading?

So here’s the challenge:

Take a look at your day.

  • How much time do you spend scrolling social media or watching TV?

  • What if you swapped just a little bit of that for reading?

Trust me, it’s worth it.

Start with a book that grabs your interest, set a goal, and make it a routine.

Now, I get it — carrying books around can be a bit of a hassle.

They take up space, they get heavy, and sometimes, they just don’t fit into your day-to-day life. But that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on reading.

Start with ebooks. They’re a great way to ease back into the habit.

You can carry an entire library in your pocket, read anywhere, anytime, and even adjust the font size or background to make the experience more comfortable.

Plus, ebooks often come with built-in dictionaries, so you can look up unfamiliar words on the spot, making it a great learning tool.

And if you’re like me and find it hard to carve out time to sit down and read, there’s an even better option — Audible.

I’ve been using Audible for a while now, and it’s honestly been a game-changer. Whether I’m commuting, exercising, or just relaxing, I can dive into a good book without needing to hold one.

It speeds up the process and gets you back into the world of stories and ideas.
